This course was devised for equine practitioners with a good working knowledge in equine ophthalmology and provides an update on recent developments in the field. The speaker panel consisting of 2 of the most highly respected and experienced equine ophthalmologists worldwide will be discussing the current thinking on pathophysiology of different conditions affecting the equine eye and will cover established and recently developed cutting-edge diagnostic / therapeutic techniques and medications through lectures and in particular via wetlabs.
In the mornings the following topics will be covered in highly illustrated lectures and case presentations:
- Recent Developments in Ophthalmic Diagnostics& Therapeutics
- Diagnostic Ocular Ultrasound
- Corneal Healing & Ulcer Management
- A Clinician’s Guide to Ocular Immunology & Immune Mediated Diseases
- Corneal Surgery – When, why and how?
- Non-Ulcerative & Immune Mediated Keratitis
- Equine Uveitis – Understanding a Complex Disease
- Equine Uveitis – A Rational Approach to Treatment
- The Posterior Eye & the Prepurchase Examination
- Ocular Neoplasia – Optimal Approaches to Therapy
In the afternoons, 7 hours of practical sessions will give attendees plenty of opportunity to put theory into practice on live horses and equine specimens and to ask questions in a relaxed atmosphere in small groups (2 – 4 attendees), all under the supervision of the specialists. Plenty of clinical cases will be available which will be examined together with the experts. Attendees will furthermore be able to choose which diagnostic and therapeutic techniques they would like to have demonstrated and train on equine specimens:
- Ophthalmologic & Surgical Procedures – Attendees to choose: Nerve blocks, lavage system placement, eyelid laceration repair (emergency situations), keratotomy, temporary tarsorrhaphy & enucleation
- Ocular Ultrasound- live horses
- Examination of Horses with Eye Problems – live horses
- Pre-Purchase Examination Case Discussions
Attendees can furthermore bring challenging or undiagnosed cases to the course, which will be worked up by the attendees under the supervision of the specialists.
The course fee includes lunches at a restaurant, coffee/tea breaks, extensive electronic course notes and a certificate of attendance. Attendees can choose to only attend the lectures (= Lectures Only) on this course or can register for the entire course (= Lectures & Practical Sessions). Early course registration is recommended as there are only a limited number of places available due to the highly practical nature of this course.
