COURSE DESCRIPTION

This 1 ½-day practical course is suitable for veterinarians from mixed and equine practice who are keen to develop and update their knowledge and especially their practical skills on medical ultrasound of the following anatomic region: Abdomen – GI & non-GI organs (percutaneously & transrectally), thorax, eye, jugular vein etc..  The use of ultrasound for pleural drainage, for collecting biopsy samples and when working up foals will also be discussed.

The panel of internationally renowned speakers/instructors has a wealth of experience with medical ultrasound and will share common diagnostic pitfalls, erroneous image interpretations, practical tips and pearls of wisdom open and honestly with the attendees.
In the mornings the following topics will be covered in well-illustrated lectures and case presentations (in English, with Italian moderation):

  • Gastrointestinal Ultrasound incl. fast localised exam in horses with colic
  • Ultrasound of non-GI Abdominal Organs
  • Ultrasound-guided Biopsy Techniques
  • Non-Cardiac Thoracic Ultrasound (incl. Pleural Drainage)
  • Ocular Ultrasound
  • Ultrasound Exam of the Foal
  • Miscellaneous Medical Ultrasound – Thrombophlebitis, choke, transrectal ultrasound etc.

In the afternoons, 5 hours of practical sessions will give attendees plenty of opportunity to put theory into practice on live horses and equine specimens and to ask questions in small groups (2 – 4 attendees / ultrasound machine), all under the supervision of specialists. The following practical sessions will be covered during the course:

  • Fast localised abdominal ultrasound in horses with colic
  • Ocular Ultrasound
  • The complete Abdominal Ultrasound Exam & Biopsy Techniques
  • Thoracic Ultrasound
  • Soft Tissue & Head/Neck Ultrasound

The course fee includes lunch, coffee/tea breaks, extensive electronic course notes and a certificate of attendance. Attendees can choose to only attend the lectures (= Lectures Only) on this course or can register for the entire course (= Lectures & Practical Sessions).  Early course registration is recommended as there are only a limited number of places available due to the highly practical nature of this course.

Jenny is originally from a small town in the northeastern United States, just outside of Boston. Growing up, she spent much of her spare time at a local barn, which was where her passion for horses first developed. She attended the Louisiana State University School of Veterinary Medicine. Upon graduation from veterinary school, Jenny began an internship at Chino Valley Equine Hospital in southern California. After her internship, she completed a residency in large animal internal medicine at Colorado State University. Following her residency, Jenny stayed on at CSU for a year in a clinical position. In 2012, she moved to Lexington, Kentucky to work at the Hagyard Equine Medical Institute at the McGee Medicine Center, spending many hours in the intensive care unit treating critically ill newborn foals. In 2013, she relocated to Auckland, New Zealand where she joined Veterinary Associates Equine and Farm. Since moving to New Zealand, she has returned annually to Hagyard’s for a month-long locum position in an effort to stay current with the latest advances in equine veterinary care. As a diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine and a Registered Equine Medicine Specialist, she is interested in all aspects of equine medicine, but she is particularly passionate about critical care and neonatology.

After graduating from Massey University in New Zealand, Brett completed an internship at Randwick Equine Centre in Sydney Australia and then worked in mixed large animal practice in the Waikato region of New Zealand for a number of years. In 2002, Brett began a 3-year residency in large animal (equine) internal medicine at the University of Illinois followed by a 2-year fellowship in large animal emergency and critical care at the University of Pennsylvania's New Bolton Centre. Brett has a masters in equine exercise physiology and is board certified with the American Colleges of Veterinary Internal Medicine. After his time at Penn, Brett was on faculty at the University of Georgia working in their teaching hospital and then worked for almost 10 years in the University of Melbourne's veterinary teaching hospital. In 2021, Brett and his wife Charity decided that they needed a change and made plans to move back to New Zealand in 2022; before coming home, Brett worked at Lethbridge Equine Hospital to help with their intensive medicine cases. Brett now lives in the Tasman Bay District in New Zealand's South Island where he works as a large animal ambulatory veterinarian.
