COURSE DESCRIPTION
This workshop has been specifically designed for advancing the skillset of the recently graduated equine practitioner. During the 10.5 hours of small group practical sessions and case discussions, attendees will be equipped with the theoretical knowledge and practical skills needed to make the most of their abilities and ultrasound machine, in the assessment and diagnosis of frequently encountered equine musculoskeletal conditions affecting the heel region, pastern, fetlock, metacarpus/metatarsus (including suspensory apparatus, digital flexor tendons, check ligament, digital flexor tendon sheath) and stifle.
The practical and interactive 1.5-day workshop is supported by selected On-Demand Online Lectures given by specialists:
- Maximising the Use of Your Ultrasound Machine
- Ultrasound of the Heel & Pastern Region
- Fine-tune your Ultrasound Technique - Flexor Tendons & Check Ligaments
- Comparative Ultrasound of the Suspensory Ligament – Frontlimb vs. Hindlimb
- Ultrasound of the Fetlock Joint Region
- Ultrasound of the Digital Flexor Tendon Sheath & Annular Ligament
- Ultrasound of the Stifle Joint
The speakers will be sharing invaluable tips/tricks and pearls of wisdom with the attendees during the 7.5 hours of practical sessions in small groups (2 – 4 vets per ultrasound machine) on live horses, and a further 3 hours of interactive case discussions. Each attendee will be able to extensively hone their practical skills at the following practical stations:
- Mastering Machine Settings & Options
- Superficial & Deep Digital Flexor Tendons (incl. Check Ligaments)
- Suspensory Ligament (Frontlimb vs. Hindlimb)
- Heel & Pastern Region
- Fetlock & Digital Flexor Tendon Sheath
- The Stifle: Cranial (Patellar Ligaments) & Medial Approach
- The Stifle: Cranial (Articular Surface) & Lateral Approach
- Individual Training Consolidation – Regions chosen by Attendees
The course fee includes lunch, coffee/tea breaks, the wine & cheese reception, extensive electronic course notes and a certificate of attendance. Early course registration is recommended as there are only a limited number of places available due to the highly practical nature of this course.
Dr Kirsten Neil graduated from the University of Melbourne in 1996. Over the past 18 years Kirsten has worked in equine hospitals in Victoria, at the Scone Veterinary Hospital’s neonatal intensive care unit, at Massey University in New Zealand and completed her specialist residency training at Michigan State University in the United States. Whilst at Michigan State, Kirsten also completed a Masters degree on the use of glucosamine and chondroitin sulphate for equine osteoarthritis.
Kirsten has been an FEI veterinarian for over 80 eventing, showjumping, and dressage competitions, and has been a treating and private veterinarian at numerous events including at the Sydney Olympics, Badminton and Rolex Three Day Events. Kirsten has been a team veterinarian for Equestrian Australia, including at the Young Rider Eventing Team Trans Tasman in 2012 and the World Equestrian Games in 2014. Kirsten is the Victorian Eventing Squad team vet, and attends the major three day events in Australia to care for Victorian based squad horses and her own private clients. In 2013, Kirsten was awarded the Equestrian Victoria Official of the Year Award.
In 2008 Kirsten decided to concentrate on her particular interest in performance horses and started Sporthorse Veterinary Specialists, a practice dedicated to sport and pleasure horses. Kirsten provides second opinion, medical and referral consultations for other veterinarians, and concentrates on problems in sporthorses, in particular lameness and poor performance.
Kirsten has a special interest in musculoskeletal ultrasonography and regularly attends conferences overseas dedicated to the advanced diagnosis and care of the equine athlete, and instructs veterinarians at conferences in Australia in musculoskeletal ultrasonography. In 2012 Kirsten obtained an advanced qualification in equine lameness, biomechanics and imaging by becoming a certified member of the International Society of Equine Locomotor Pathology (ISELP), and is currently the only veterinarian in Australia to have obtained this qualification.
In 2013, Kirsten became a Diplomate of American College of Veterinary Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation, and is one of only three veterinarians in Australia with this qualification.
More InfoOlivier graduated in 1992 from the Université de Liège. After 4 years in mixed private practice he entered an ACVS and ECVS standard residency program in Large Animal Surgery at the Université de Montréal, Québec, Canada. In 2000 he obtained a Diplôme d'Etudes Spécialisées Vétérinaires from the Université de Montréal and returned to Belgium to join the De Bosdreef-De Morette group of equine referral clinics. After 16 years in the private sector, Olivier decided to return to academy and joined The University of Adelaide, Adelaide, South Australia as Senior Lecturer in Equine Surgery and Clinic Lead of the Equine Health and Performance Centre.
Special interests: minimally invasive surgery (orthopedic and soft tissue), sub-chondral cyst-like lesions, regenerative therapy, post-operative rehabilitation.

Roseworthy Campus (home to the School of Animal & Veterinary Sciences, University of Adelaide) is in a rual area approximatley 60 km (1 hour drive) from Adelaide Airport. From the airport, travel via National Highway A1 and National Highway M20 to Willaston Interchange ramp to Nuriootpa (in the Gawler Belt). Take the exit from National Highway A20. Follow Redbanks Rd and Mudla Wirra Rd to the Campus in Wasleys.
