COURSE DESCRIPTION
Head trauma/conditions are frequently encountered by 1st opinion veterinarians and a significant number of these cases can be appropriately dealt with in the field and don’t require specialized equipment. This 2-day practical course covers head wounds, facial & jaw fractures, sinus & guttural pouch problems, oral & tongue lacerations, nasofrontal suture periostitis, oral and nasal foreign bodies etc. The panel of internationally renowned specialists will discuss in detail how to triage horses appropriately and which cases can be treated within your own practice setting. Between both mornings the following highly-illustrated lectures will be given:
- Facial Bones & Sinus Anatomy – A refresher
- Paranasal Sinuses – The Work-Up
- Paranasal Sinuses – Surgical Access
- Working up Facial Wounds & Fractures (incl. X-ray & Ultrasound)
- Fractures of the Mandible & Maxilla
- Stabilizing Rostral Mandibular Fractures
- Management of Facial Bone Fractures
- Aftercare & Complications of Facial Fracture Repair
- Hunting for the Origin of Purulent Material – Mouth & Nasal Passages
- Oral & Tongue Lacerations
- Mandibular Fracture Repair Options
- Nasofrontal Suture Periostitis – An increasingly common Complication
Open and frank discussions are encouraged and the speakers will share their personal experiences, successes and failures, with attendees.
In the afternoons, 7 hours of practical sessions will give attendees plenty of opportunity to put theory into practice on cadaver specimens and to ask questions in true small groups (2 attendees per specimen), all under the supervision of specialists. Dr. James Carmalt graduated from the University of Cambridge in 1998 and then completed an internship in large animal medicine at the Western College of Veterinary Medicine (WCVM). After working in general mixed practice (Tasmania, Australia), he returned to the WCVM for two back-to-back residencies in equine practice and large animal surgery.
Next, Dr. Carmalt spent one year practising in Australia at an equine specialty practice that focused on Thoroughbred broodmare and foal surgery. He returned to Canada in 2007 and joined the WCVM's Department of Large Animal Sciences where he is a tenured full professor.
Dr. Carmalt travels extensively to work in private practices and academic institutions internationally. He has authored more than 90 peer-reviewed publications and has presented his research findings at more than two dozen international conferences.
His main areas of research are equine dentistry (specifically temporomandibular joint or TMJ disease) and evidence-based medicine. He holds a PhD (the topic of which was equine pituitary pars intermedia dysfunction or PPID), and is quadruple-boarded (equine practice, equine dentistry, equine sports medicine and rehabilitation, and large animal surgery).
Dr. Carmalt commonly peer-reviews professional publications including those for PLOS One, Veterinary Surgery and other high quality journals. Additionally, he is an editorial board member of the open access, EBVM journal Veterinary Evidence, which is published by RCVS Knowledge.
More InfoDr. Brad Tanner found his passion for horses at a young age on his family’s farm in Kentucky. He obtained a bachelor’s degree in Animal Science from the University of Kentucky in 2001, followed by veterinary school at Auburn University, graduating in 2005. After graduation Brad completed an ambulatory internship at Rood and Riddle, the following year became an associate and served as the resident veterinarian for Shadwell farm. Dr. Tanner became a shareholder in the practice in 2012. He is one of very few Board-Certified Veterinary Dentist™ and a Diplomate of the American Veterinary Dental College.
His ambulatory practice is largely focused on dentistry, Thoroughbred reproduction, neonatal/ foal medicine and herd health. Dr. Tanner has a large referral case load for advanced dentistry and surgical procedures with an interest in sinus disease. He serves on many committees in organized medicine for the AVMA, AAEP, KAEP and College of Veterinary Dentistry. Dr. Tanner is published in both the areas of reproduction and dentistry and frequently lectures at local, national and international scientific meetings.
He is married with two sons and enjoys spending time outside on their farm in Versailles and raising Thoroughbred foals. Away from the farm he enjoys coaching youth baseball/ basketball and attending live sporting events-UK sports, horse racing and baseball games.

“A well organized approach to proper equine dentistry for every practitioner. This course will prepare a new graduate and experienced practitioners.”
- Scott Wilson, CA - Essentials of Equine Dentistry course
“On the high-end of course but well worth the expense. The title was misleading, this course helped increase my knowledge and scope of veterinary dentistry. I do not believe this was "Basic Dentistry" content, it was better.”
- Amanda Flessner, CA - Essentials of Equine Dentistry course
