COURSE DESCRIPTION
Poor performance is relatively common, often non-specific, and determining the cause(s) can pose a significant challenge to equine veterinarians. We are often faced with questions such as ‘My horse has started to make a noise during exercise and struggles to keep up with the other horses; what do you think is causing it?’; ’Do we need to investigate my horse’s reluctance to be ridden and problems with lateral work or do you think that this is a training-related issue?’. Evaluating horses for poor performance can be a daunting task because different conditions may present with similar clinical signs, leaving vets wondering where to start the investigation.
This 2-day Skills Workshop, new for 2025, comprises a program of 9 hours of practical sessions designed to equip veterinarians with the practical toolkit for investigation of both orthopedic and cardiorespiratory causes of poor performance, and to get the results that will lead to a definitive diagnosis. Attendees will join hands-on, genuine small-group sessions with live horses and simulators unique to VetPD courses, covering clinical exercise testing, static and dynamic respiratory endoscopy (3-5 attendees per endoscope), ridden horse evaluation, objective gait analysis, saddle fit assessment, ultrasound-guided injection techniques, ultrasonography (neck, back or pelvis; 2-4 attendees per ultrasound machine) and radiographic skills.
The faculty of internationally renowned specialists will present the following highly-illustrated lectures in English:
- The Challenge of the Poorly Performing Horse
- Integrating Technology: Objective Gait Analysis
- A Novel Perspective on Overground/Dynamic Endoscopy
- Beyond In-Hand Evaluation: Ridden Assessment incl. Saddle and Rider
- Exercise Testing: Identifying Subclinical Problems in Sports Horses
- Murmurs & Arrythmias: Classification & Decision-Making
- Optimizing Image Quality: Radiography & Ultrasonography
Over the 2 days, 9 hours of hands-on practical sessions will allow attendees to further their practical skills on live horses and simulators in small groups, and to further discuss the above topics with the specialists both during the practicals and in the interactive case-discussion sessions. The following practical sessions will be supervised by the specialists during the course:
- Static Upper Respiratory Tract Endoscopy
- Subjective Lameness Evaluation
- Objective Gait Analysis for Lameness Evaluation
- Saddle Assessment & Ridden Evaluation
- Ultrasonography Skills Workshop (Neck, Back or Pelvis)
- Exercise Testing: HR Monitoring, ECG, Lactate Measurement etc.
- Radiography Skills Workshop (Front and/or Hindlimb)
- Ultrasound-Guided Injection Techniques Workshop: Sacroiliac Joints & Thoracolumbar Facet Joints
Dr. Acutt obtained her veterinary degree from the University of Bristol, United Kingdom. She then traveled to the University of California, Davis to undergo additional training in her areas of interest, equine orthopedics and sports medicine. She was the first person to complete a residency specifically in equine diagnostic imaging, based at Colorado State University and became a diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Radiologists (EDI) in 2022. She worked at CSU following her residency in the role of Senior Fellow in Veterinary Diagnostic Imaging. Dr. Acutt’s clinical and research interests focus on comparative imaging in the equine athlete. Recently Elizabeth joined University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine as Assistant Professor of Clinical Large Animal Diagnostic Imaging.
More InfoErin Contino, MS, DVM, Dipl. ACVSMR, is an Associate Professor in equine sports medicine and rehabilitation at Colorado State University (CSU) in Fort Collins, Colorado. She graduated from CSU with a Master's in clinical sciences in 2009 and a veterinary degree in 2010. She then completed a one-year internship at Pioneer Equine Hospital in California before returning to CSU for a three-year equine sports medicine and rehabilitation residency followed by a 1-year fellowship in equine musculoskeletal ultrasound. Dr. Contino became a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation in 2014. Her clinical and research interests include equine musculoskeletal imaging, diagnostic analgesia, lameness, and poor performance in equine athletes. She's actively involved in the leadership of ACVSMR and AAEP and, in her spare time, enjoys competing in 3-day eventing.
More InfoMary received her DVM degree from the University of Georgia before completing a residency in large animal internal medicine at the University of Florida. She became a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (Large Animal) in 1996. Mary completed doctoral work in Physiology at the Medical University of South Carolina with work in endotoxemia and endotoxin tolerance. After this, she completed two years in a cardiology/ultrasound training program in the Sports Medicine section at the University of Pennsylvania New Bolton Center before taking a position as a Lecturer in Equine Medicine at the University of California, Davis for 3 years. Mary returned to New Bolton Center to work in their treadmill facility for 3 years, before working as an associate clinical professor in Large Animal Medicine at the University of Minnesota. Currently, she is a part owner of Equine Sports Medicine Consultants, an ambulatory consulting practice focusing on sports medicine and imaging, cardiology and internal medicine, in southeastern PA. Mary’s clinical interests include cardiology and respiratory disorders and how dysfunction in these systems affects performance, as well as neonatology and critical care. She has published several scientific manuscripts in peer-reviewed journals, as well as presented numerous abstracts at national and international meetings, and participated in many imaging wet labs at regional and national meetings.
More InfoDr. Laurie Tyrrell-Schroeder is a 2004 graduate of Michigan State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine. She completed an internship in diagnostic imaging and sports medicine at Virginia Equine Imaging in Middleburg, VA, and remained an associate for several years. With an interest in integrative medicine and rehabilitation of both large and small animals, she obtained additional certifications in acupuncture and canine rehabilitation. Dr. Tyrrell became involved with Equinosis in its infancy, guiding product and business development and serving as a principal investigator for the company’s National Science Foundation STTR grants. Dr. Tyrrell now serves as the Director of Veterinary Services for Equinosis, training veterinarians in the use of inertial sensor-based lameness measurement in the equine lameness evaluation.
