COURSE DESCRIPTION

This two-day practical course has been developed for equine veterinarians with a good working knowledge in the field of mare reproduction and provides a critical update on the management of mares for artificial insemination, on different causes that lead to mares being barren and how to investigate and treat these problems (incl. hysteroscopy). The 2nd day will focus on the pregnant mare with management of twin pregnancies, foetal sexing, different pregnancy-related problems and peri-partum emergencies (incl. dystocia & retained foetal membranes etc.).

The highly-illustrated lectures will be held in English (without translation, but with German moderation) in the mornings. In the afternoons, 7 hours of practical / case-based sessions will give attendees plenty of opportunity to put theory into practice on barren/pregnant mares and on cadavers in small groups (2 – 4 attendees / ultrasound machine) and to discuss all aspects of mare reproduction with the world-renowned specialists. Each attendee will be rotating through the following practical stations:

  • Ultrasound of the barren mare (incl. doppler)
  • Management of Mares & Uterine Sampling Techniques – Swabbing, flushing & biopsies
  • Hysteroscopy
  • Transrectal Ultrasound – Assessment of the Foetus & Utero-placental Unit
  • Foetal Sexing – Transrectally at 65 & 120 days
  • Obstetrical examination and intervention

The course fee includes lunches at a restaurant, coffee/tea breaks, a wine & cheese reception, extensive electronic course notes and a certificate of attendance. Attendees can choose to only attend the lectures (= Lectures Only) on this course or can register for the entire course (= Lectures & Practical Sessions). Early course registration is recommended as there are only a limited number of places available.

This course is suitable for RCVS Modules: B-EP.3; C-E.5; C-E.9; C-E.10; C-E.11; C-E.15; C-E.16
