COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course has been designed to equip the equine practitioners with the theoretical knowledge and practical skills needed to make the most of their abilities and ultrasound machine, in the diagnosis and treatment of frequently encountered equine musculoskeletal conditions affecting the front- and hindlimbs. This course is suitable for all vets aiming to improve their knowledge and skills in this area, as the practical sessions will be adapted to the attendees’ skill levels.
The course will run over two days, with a focus on highly illustrated lectures which will be systematically approached:
- How to get the most out of your ultrasound machine
- Flexor Tendons & Check Ligaments
- Digital Flexor Tendon Sheath & Annular Ligament
- Suspensory Ligament – Frontlimb vs. Hindlimb
- Fetlock Joint Region
- Heel & Pastern Region
- Carpus & Carpal Sheath
- Elbow & Shoulder Joint
- Tarsus & Tarsal Sheath
- Stifle Joint Region
- Hip Joint & Pelvis
The speakers will be sharing invaluable tips/tricks and pearls of wisdom with the attendees during the 7 hours of practical sessions in small groups (2 – 4 vets per ultrasound machine) on live horses. Each attendee will be able to extensively hone his/her practical skills at the following practical stations:
- Machine Set-Up
- Ultrasound of the Metacarpus
- Digital Flexor Tendon Sheath & Fetlock Region
- Ultrasound of the Frog, Heel Bulb & Pastern
- Tarsus, Tarsal Sheath & Proximal Metatarsus
- Stifle Joint Region
The course fee includes hot lunches, coffee/tea breaks, extensive electronic course notes and a certificate of attendance. Attendees can choose to only attend the lectures (= Lectures Only) on this course or can register for the entire course (= Lectures & Practical Sessions). Early course registration is recommended as there are only a limited number of places available due to the highly practical nature of this course.
Alex graduated from the University of Bristol in 2015 with a Bachelors (BVSc) in Veterinary Science as well as having intercalated and graduated in 2013 with a Bachelors (BSc with First Class Honours) in Pathology & Microbiology. He then worked briefly for 6 months for the PDSA (People's Dispensary for Sick Animals) charity. Following this, he relocated to Florida, United States, to successfully complete an 18 month rotating internship in a busy, private equine hospital (Equine Medical Center of Ocala) in the "horse capital of the world", Ocala. He then returned back to the UK and undertook an ambulatory role in a first opinion equine practice based in Surrey for a further 2 years. After this, he then completed a 3 year specialist Senior Clinical Training Scholarship in Equine Surgery and simultaneously obtained a Masters in Veterinary Medicine (MVetMed) at the Royal Veterinary College finishing in June 2022. He then moved to a private equine hospital for 6 months in Leicestershire before returning back to the Royal Veterinary College as a Staff Clinician in Equine Surgery in January 2023. He then became a Lecturer in Equine Surgery in February 2024 after having successfully passed the European College of Veterinary Surgeons (ECVS) specialist board examinations, thereby becoming an RCVS and EBVS® European Specialist in Equine Surgery. He is interested in all aspects of Equine Surgery (particularly minimally invasive surgery), as well as lameness and poor performance investigations.
More InfoGiorgio qualified from the University of Turin, Italy, in 1989. After an Internship in Equine Surgery at the Animal Health Trust in 1991/92, he settled in Pisa, Tuscany where he spent over twenty years in private practice, further developing his interests in equine surgery and lameness. This included assignments as a contract Professor at the University of Pisa. More recently Giorgio started travelling in the Middle East for work and after an 18 months spell in the UAE working for a large private stable involved in flat and endurance racing, he made his way back to Europe, joining Donnington Grove in 2016. Giorgio is past president of SIVE, the Italian Association of Equine Practitioners and of FEEVA, the Federation of European Equine Veterinary Associations; he is past Board member of the ESVOT (European Society of Veterinary Orthopaedics and Traumatology). He is a certified member of ISELP (International Society of Equine Locomotor Pathology.
More InfoSarah qualified from the University of Cambridge in 2001 and subsequently undertook a one year internship at the Animal Health Trust, focusing on orthopaedics and the poorly performing horse. She then spent three years undertaking a surgical residency at the University of Liverpool, focusing on referral orthopaedics, and orthopaedic and soft tissue surgery, upon completion of which she stayed on as a lecturer and clinician in Equine Orthopaedics for a further year.
Sarah was awarded the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons’ Certificate in Equine Surgery in 2005. In 2006, she joined Rossdale and Partners and in the same year became a Diplomate of the European College of Veterinary Surgeons. In 2007, Sarah became an RCVS Specialist in Equine Surgery. She is currently an orthopaedic specialist at Rossdales Equine Diagnostic Centre, dealing with secondary and tertiary orthopaedic referral work and her case load is primarily competition horses and general purpose riding horses.
Sarah speaks regularly at national and international veterinary meetings, has papers published in major equine journals and has also contributed to several leading equine text books. She has been an examiner of candidates sitting the RCVS Certificate in Equine Surgery and is currently an examiner of candidates sitting to become Diplomates of the European College of Veterinary Surgeons.

DIRECTIONS
Equivet is located in Vermont Equivet racetrack, 15 km from the city center of the old and the new road between Turku. The Ring 1 is found inside.
Follow the signposts for Ring 1 and Vermo Leppävaara, past the Sello shopping center. The clinic is located in the pit area by the main stand side of the team building.
