PANEL DISCUSSION DESCRIPTION

Musculoskeletal disorders and injuries are a common-place problem in dogs from all walks of life. However, they have an added impact on working dogs when the outcome of the injuries affects not only their quality of life but also whether they will be able to return to function – be it that of a high-level agility athlete or a highly specialised service dog.

This fascinating panel discussion will address some of the common musculoskeletal injuries, with a focus on the working dog, including the recognition and diagnosis of specific injuries, as well as the possible approaches to their treatment and correction and options for management going forward.

Join this multidisciplinary panel of internationally renowned specialists as they discuss and debate the most recent advances in diagnostics, surgery, rehabilitation and therapeutics for our canine athletes. Questions from attendees will be welcomed.

Dr. Leilani Alvarez is the Director of the Tina Santi Flaherty Rehabilitation & Fitness Service and head of our Integrative and Rehabilitative Medicine Department. Dr. Alvarez is one of few specialists worldwide that is board certified in canine sports medicine and rehabilitation. She has been practicing rehabilitation medicine for over a decade. Her advanced training specializes her skills in diagnosis and treatment of soft tissue injuries such as joint injuries, ligament and tendon tears, and spinal injuries. Dr. Alvarez utilizes Integrative Medicine, which combines modern conventional approaches with Complementary and Alternative Medicine. Integrative Medicine includes therapies such as regenerative medicine (stem cells and platelet rich plasma), physical rehabilitation, acupuncture, spinal manipulation and herbal medicine, which help to increase the overall health of a patient and can often increase the success of conventional treatments.

Dr. Alvarez was the founder of a successful Integrative Medicine service at Katonah Bedford Veterinary Specialty Hospital prior to joining the staff of the AMC. She completed her rotating surgical and medicine internship and residency at AMC. She is also fluent in Spanish. Dr. Alvarez is a renowned national and international lecturer, research scientist, and accomplished author of peer-reviewed articles. She is the 2017 recipient of the prestigious John Sherman Award for Excellence in Veterinary Rehabilitation.

She leads one of only 5 accredited residencies nationwide for training residents in canine sports medicine and rehabilitation. Her research interests include soft tissue and sports injuries, geriatric medicine, joint supplements and nutraceuticals.

After earning a doctor of veterinary medicine from Washington State University in 1999, Dr. Brown conducted an internship at the Rood and Riddle Equine Hospital in Lexington, Kentucky, in 2000 and completed a surgery residency at Michigan State University in 2003. Dr. Brown was on the faculty at Virginia Tech’s Marion DuPont Scott Equine Medical Center from 2003 to 2010. Dr. Brown has been board-certified in large animal surgery by the American College of Veterinary Surgeons since 2004.

Dr. Brown is also very passionate about working and sporting dogs. Having four Labrador Retrievers that are FEMA Certified Urban Search and Rescue dogs as well as competitors in hunting retriever, field trial, and disc competitions really brings it home. Starting her career as an equine surgeon and working on elite equine athletes has brought a unique perspective and skill-set to benefit her canine clients and patients. This is especially true in the use of diagnostic ultrasound, regenerative medicine (stem cell and PRP) and intra-articular therapies in the diagnosis and treatment of canine orthopedic injuries. She became a Certified Canine Rehabilitation Therapist in 2012 and started K-9 Sports Vet, a mobile canine sports medicine and rehabilitation practice. In 2013 she achieved Diplomate status with the American College of Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation. In 2017 she founded the first stand-alone rehabilitation and sports medicine practice in the Tampa Bay area, Florida Veterinary Rehabilitation and Sports Medicine.
