EVENT DESCRIPTION

An unforgettable Continuing Education (CE) Event designed for those seeking both clinical inspiration and an extraordinary travel experience – all in the company of like-minded professionals. Blending 20 – 40 hours of RACE-Approval pending equine CE with Greek Island culture this, is a truly unique opportunity to learn, connect, explore and unwind.


The Experience

Your 6-day stay begins with a warm welcome at the Sheraton Rhodes Resort and a celebratory dinner showcasing Greece’s Mediterranean flavours and wines. Over the course of your stay, you will have plenty of time to wander through Rhodes’ enchanting medieval Old Town (a UNESCO World Heritage Site), discover its ancient and archaeological treasures, immerse yourself in Greek culture or simply unwind with a good book on one of the island’s many gorgeous beaches. Evenings will be filled with relaxed wining and dining in the company of vets from all over the world, against the backdrop of warm island nights.

On Friday there won’t be any lectures, which will allow attendees and their partners/guests to relax at the pool or on the beach, or go on a day trip to further explore the beautiful island. Excursions to the 'Acropolis of Rhodes', the 'Valley of the Butterflies', 'Medieval City of Rhodes', 'Mandraki Marina', 'Kallithea Springs' or the ‘Ancient City of Kamiros’, to name but a few options, can be organised through the hotel (Subject to availability and surcharges [transfers & entrance at cost] apply).


The Continuing Education

From Mon – Thu there will be a total of 5 hours of lectures and interactive case-discussions per day, delivered by hand-picked, internationally-renowned speakers Drs. Roger Smith DECVS, DECVSMR (RVC, UK), Ben Buchanan DACVIM, DACVECC (Brazos Valley Equine Hospital, USA) and Sam Hole DECVD (Pool House Equine Hospital, UK). The 20+ hours of in-person cutting-edge lectures / case discussions will cover the following disciplines (program to follow soon), with a further 20+ hours of complimentary Online Learning available on-demand:

VetPD encourages open and frank discussions, and for the speakers to share their personal experiences with attendees, be it successes or failures. There will be plenty of opportunities to discuss diagnostic/therapeutic strategies and cases with the speakers during the lectures or the dedicated case discussions.

*The event fee includes airport transfers, accommodation, all meals (incl. tea/coffee and one soft drink per meal), a 3-hour walking tour of the Ancient City of Rhodes, a 3-hour tour of the Acropolis, all lectures and workshops as well as extensive course notes and a certificate of attendance. Attendees can choose to stay in a single room or can share a room with another attendee at a reduced price.  Attendees are also welcome to attend the course with a partner/guest (special guest price available).  The course fee does not include flights or alcoholic drinks. Rooms are allocated at the discretion of VetPD. Early course registration is recommended as there are only a limited number of places available.

  • VetPD Ltd, accepts liability for the course program only (lectures) Liability for airport transfer, accommodation, meals and all other pre-booked components (safari activities etc.) rest with the Sheraton Rhodes resort.
  • Cancellation of these components of the course is subject to the Terms and Conditions of the Sheraton Rhodes resort.
  • Attendees are expected to take out comprehensive medical and travel insurance in the event of unforeseen circumstances leading to attendees falling ill or having to cancel their trip to Rhodes.

Dr. Ben Buchanan grew up in Navasota, Texas. He went to Texas A&M and graduated from there with his DVM in 2001. Afterwards, he completed two residencies; Large Animal Internal Medicine at University of Tennessee, Knoxville in 2004 and Emergency and Critical Care at University of Pennsylvania in 2005. Ben is one of the very few people in the world to be board certified in Internal Medicine and Emergency Critical Care. Dr. Buchanan has a very unique experience in colic, respiratory disease, cardiac disease, eye conditions and sick foals. He joined BVEH Navasota in 2005, where he works alongside his father, T-Bone. He is also active in community outreach by speaking at meetings and events around the world regarding equine care.

Sam has spent approaching 30 years in the pursuit of providing better oral health care for horses, via equine dental training both in the UK and the USA, two undergraduate degrees and two postgraduate veterinary certificates and a postgraduate veterinary diploma. Sam was among the first cohort to sit and pass the first BEVA/BVDA EDT exams in 2001 and became a founding member of the BAEDT. Sam was the first to be awarded the RCVS certificate in advanced veterinary practice (CertAVP) in equine dentistry in 2012, and in 2015 became a RCVS recognised Advanced Practitioner in both Equine Dentistry and Equine Practice. In 2016 Sam became one of only a handful of clinicians to become a Diplomate of the EVDC via the equine fast-track pathway, by successfully passing the entrance examinations. In 2019 Sam become an Honorary Clinical Associate Professor in Equine Dentistry at School of Veterinary Medicine and Science, University of Nottingham. Sam is a EVDC residency director and supervisor at Pool House Equine Hospital, currently sits on the EVDC Executive Committee and is the Equine Educational Chair. Sam is the equine lead on the BVDA committee and a member of BEVA’s equine dentistry governance committee. Sam has tutored on courses and spoken at conferences on equine dentistry for over 20 years and has authored and co-authored several journal papers on equine veterinary dentistry.

Roger Smith is Professor of Equine Orthopaedics at the Royal Veterinary College, London, UK. He qualified as a veterinary surgeon from Cambridge University (UK) in 1987, having obtained a First for his undergraduate degree and a Cambridge Blue at swimming. After 2 years in practice, he returned to academia to undertake further clinical training as a Resident in Equine Studies at the Royal Veterinary College. Following his residency, he undertook a 3 year research project culminating in the award of a PhD for his studies on the extracellular matrix of equine tendon.

He remained at the Royal Veterinary College, first as a Lecturer in Equine Surgery, then as Senior Lecturer in Equine Surgery before his appointment as Professor in Equine Orthopaedics in December 2003.

He holds the Diploma of Equine Orthopaedics from the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons and is a Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons Specialist in Equine Surgery. He is a Diplomate of the European Colleges of Veterinary Surgeons and Veterinary Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation, and is also a Large Animal Associate of the European College of Veterinary Diagnostic Imaging.

In 2016, he was awarded the Fellowship of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons for meritorious contribution to knowledge and was elected to president of the European College of Veterinary Surgeons in July 2017.

He divides his time between running a specialist orthopaedic referral service within the Royal Veterinary College, where he is involved in lameness diagnostics, imaging and orthopaedic surgery, and continuing to direct research into equine tendon disease. His principal research interests are understanding the pathogenesis of tendon disease, diagnostics for tendon and ligament disease, and stem cell therapy for tendons in both horses and humans.

He is married to a medical doctor and has two sons.
