COURSE DESCRIPTION

The lectures and practical sessions of this course provide the equine practitioner with the knowledge and practical skills to confidently deal with the neonatal and post-neonatal foal in first opinion practice and with the decision making when to refer to a dedicated neonatal intensive care unit.  

The world-renowned panel of foal care experts consisting of Professor Pam Wilkins (Univ. of Illinois, USA) and Emily Floyd (Rossdales Equine Hospital, Newmarket, UK) will share their wealth of experience through the following highly-illustrated interactive lectures (in English, with Swedish moderation):

  • Review of Normal Birth & The Healthy Foal
  • Adverse Peripartum Events – Birth Resuscitation           
  • Initial Assessment of the Sick Foal
  • Colostral Related Diseases of the Foal   
  • Musculoskeletal Deformities of the Foal
  • The Dummy Foal          
  • The Septic Foal
  • Infectious & Traumatic Orthopaedic Injuries of Foals
  • The Uremic Foal
  • Respiratory Problems of the Foal
  • The Foal with Colic
  • Fluid & Nutritional Management in the Field

The 4 hours of workshop on mannequins/specimens and PowerPoint case-based discussions in small groups will allow attendees to further develop their practical and decision-making skills under the watchful eyes of the specialists.  Each attendee will be rotating through the following stations:

  • Placement of an Over-the-Wire Catheter on a mannequin
  • Use of Bandages, Splints & Casts on mannequins/specimens
  • PowerPoint Case-Discussions – Imaging of the Foal in the Field
  • Foal-side Quick Assessment Tests Lab
The course fee includes lunches, coffee/tea breaks, extensive electronic course notes and a certificate of attendance. Attendees can choose to only attend the lectures (=  Lectures Only ) on this course or can register for the entire course (=  Lectures & Practical Sessions ).  On the evening of the first day all attendees are invited to attend the wine & cheese reception. Early course registration is recommended as there are only a limited number of places available.

This course is suitable for RCVS Modules:          B-EP.3, C-E.1, C-E.2, C-E.3, C-E.4, C-E.5, C-E.6, C-E.7, C-E.11, C-E.15, C-E.16, C-E.17, C-VDI.5          


Emily qualified from the University of Bristol, England in 2003 and went on to work in mixed practice for 18 months. She then undertook an internship at the Liphook Equine Hospital in Hampshire before moving to California to undertake a residency in large animal internal medicine at the University of California, Davis. Emily became a diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine in 2006. Following this, she moved back to the UK and began working as a medicine clinician at Rossdales Equine Hospital in Newmarket. Her main interests are in neonatology and she is the primary clinician in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. She also carries out a variety of referral and first opinion medicine work. Emily has published a number of clinical articles in peer-reviewed veterinary journals and lectures regularly at courses/conferences on equine medicine.

Pam is a 1986 graduate of Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine. Between 1986 and 1989 she served as the originator and clinician for the equine neonatal intensive unit at Cornell, completing a Master’s degree in equine medicine and surgery simultaneously. Pam was in private practice from 1989 until 1991, when she began residency training in large animal internal medicine at New Bolton Center, University of Pennsylvania. Between 1993 and 1998, Pam completed a PhD in cardiorespiratory physiology at Cornell University. She joined the faculty at New Bolton Center in 1998 where she remained until accepting her current position at the University of Illinois Champaign-Urbana in 2008.

Pam is board certified in the specialties of Large Animal Internal Medicine and Emergency and Critical Care and has lectured extensively throughout the US and Europe. She has authored or co-authored over 370 research manuscripts, abstracts, proceedings, book chapters and invited manuscripts and participated in the training of 70 interns, residents and graduate students. Pam's particular areas of interest are perinatology, neonatology, critical care, emergency medicine, cardiorespiratory physiology and models of markers of disease severity.

DIRECTIONS

From Enköping

Drive on the E 18 towards Stockholm. Take the Draget junction, exit number 147. Turn right towards Håtuna. After 5 km you come to a four-way intersection, turn left on road 269 towards Sigtuna / Håtuna. After 4 km turn right towards Uppsala / Arlanda / Sigtuna (road 263). Drive 6.5 km and at a T-junction turn left towards Uppsala. Drive 2 km and you will see the clinic on the right side of the road. It is signposted Horse Clinic / Small Animal Clinic.

From Stockholm via E18

Drive on the E18 towards Enköping. Take the exit at junction Bro, exit number 146. After the exit on the right, turn left onto road 269 towards Sigtuna / Skokloster. After 11 km turn right towards Uppsala / Arlanda / Sigtuna (road 263). Drive 6.5 km and at a T-junction turn left towards Uppsala. Drive 2 km and you will see the clinic on the right side of the road. It is signposted Horse Clinic / Small Animal Clinic.

From Stockholm via E4

Drive on the E4 towards Uppsala. Take the Trafikplats Märsta junction, exit number 180. Drive Road 263 past Märsta towards Sigtuna, after the bridge over Garnsviken there will be a roundabout in Sigtuna. Continue on Road 263 to the right and now drive in the direction of Uppsala for about 4 km. You now see the clinic on the right side of the road. It is signposted Horse Clinic / Small Animal Clinic.

From Uppsala via E4

Drive on the E4 towards Stockholm. Take the exit at Knivsta junction, exit number 184. Turn right towards Knivsta. Drive past Knivsta and follow the road to the stop sign. (Vassunda) Drive straight ahead over road 255 and after 200 meters there will be a new stop sign. Turn left towards Sigtuna. After about 2 km and after Skråmsta, the clinic is on the left side. It is signposted Horse Clinic / Small Animal Clinic.

From Uppsala Rv 255

Drive on the Rv 255 out of Uppsala past Vilan / Sävja. Follow the road to Vassunda and take the right direction Sigtuna. After about 2 km and after Skråmsta, the clinic is on the left side. It is signposted Horse Clinic.
