Online Lecture Equine Optical Coherence Tomography
CONTENT DESCRIPTION
Ocular diseases are common in both first opinion and referral equine practice and quickly establishing a precise diagnosis in order to implement an appropriate treatment strategy is of utmost importance, as clinical deterioration can occur very quickly. Whilst many conditions can be diagnosed using routine examination techniques, advanced imaging techniques such as optical coherence tomography (OCT) can allow more accurate determination of the nature, extent and cause of ocular lesions. First described in the horse in 2014, OCT can obtain highly magnified, high-resolution images of the architecture of the equine cornea, lens, iris, retina and optic nerve which near histopathological level. Although a very newly described technique, OCT is already being used clinically in a select number of referrals institutions and it has shown much promise both clinically and as a teaching tool.
Join American and European boarded Ophthalmology specialist Dr. Richard McMullen as he reviews the physics, application, advantages and disadvantages of this cutting-edge diagnostic technology. This will be followed by presentation of case examples where OCT has been used clinically in a variety of commonly encountered equine ocular conditions.
Dr. McMullen began pursuing his higher education during his military service in Germany, obtaining his veterinary degree from the Ludwig-Maximilians University College of Veterinary Medicine. Dr. McMullen teaches classes in ophthalmology and conducts research in the area of vision, equine recurrent uveitis and immune mediated keratitis, particularly, novel methods of disease management by intravitreal injections and photodynamic therapy. Dr. McMullen is a Diplomate, American College of Veterinary Opthalmologists; Diplomate, European College of Veterinary Opthalmologists; Certificate of Additional Qualification, Equine Opthalmology, Zusatzeichnung Augenheilkunde – Pferde (Germany). He holds veterinary licenses in Alabama and in Germany, and has received numerous professional honors and awards in the United States and Europe.
