Nowadays a great percentage of equine dental extractions are performed non-surgically but should never be taken lightly as complications like dental fractures, retained root tips, collateral damage etc. easily occur. Over the past 20 years minimally-invasive surgical techniques have been developed and have led to a significant reduction of morbidity and mortality in horses. The panel of internationally renowned specialists will provide an overview on up-to-date, minimally-invasive surgical dental extraction techniques in horses, including minimally-invasive trephination & repulsion (MITR), minimally-invasive transbuccal extraction (MTE) and dental segmentation. They will furthermore be sharing technical tips and tricks and pearls of wisdom that they have accumulated over the many years of performing equine dental surgery.

Richard graduated from the Royal Veterinary College in London in 2004, following which he spent 6 months in mixed practice before undertaking an 18 month equine internship at Donnington Grove Veterinary Practice in Newbury. He then undertook a residency in equine surgery as well as a Master’s degree and then a PhD at Glasgow University.

Richard obtained his RCVS certificate in orthopaedic surgery in 2009, his ECVS diploma in Large animal surgery in 2010, a Master’s degree in Equine surgery in 2011, his PhD investigating risk factors for injury to Thoroughbred horses during racing in 2013 and his EVDC diploma in equine dentistry in 2018.

Richard enjoys all aspects of equine surgery and has research interests in both surgery and dentistry.
