CONTENT DESCRIPTION
This module will provide an in-depth and interactive exploration of the assessment and management of dental and ophthalmic pain in horses. The combination of procedural sedation with locoregional anesthesia for standing surgical procedures in the horse help circumvent the potential complications associated with general anesthesia, particularly, those related to recovery. Thus, this technique is gaining popularity.
Many surgical procedures, such as orofacial, maxillary or ophthalmic surgical procedures, are now performed as same-day events. Typically, co-infusions of sedatives and/ or opioids augmented by appropriate locoregional anesthetics techniques provide sufficient pain relief and muscle relaxation to allow for successful surgery. Case studies will be presented to illustrate real-world applications, encouraging participants to develop individualized pain management plans that consider the specific needs of each horse.
By the end of the module, attendees will be able to follow a decision-making process for the use of key locoregional techniques, and recall the practical aspects and considerations discussed in this module.
