PANEL DISCUSSION DESCRIPTION
This international panel will bring together the world’s leading experts in equine Positron Emission Tomography (PET) to explore its growing role in musculoskeletal imaging for racehorses and sports horses. As technological advancements improve access to PET, the panel will discuss both the advantages and limitations of the modality. They will debate optimal scenarios for PET application, shedding light on its clinical utility. Attendees will gain insight into the latest research and practical considerations. This session is essential for those looking to expand their knowledge of cutting-edge imaging techniques in equine medicine.
Originally from Pasadena, California, Dr. Judy attended the University of California at San Diego for his undergraduate work in Animal Physiology and Neurosciences. He then attended the School of Veterinary Medicine at the University of California at Davis. After achieving his veterinary degree, he completed an internship in large animal medicine and surgery at Texas A&M University and a residency in equine surgery and performance evaluation at UC Davis. Having successfully completed the strenuous board accreditation process, Dr. Judy is a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons. Dr. Judy is an internationally celebrated equine surgeon and valued member of the veterinary team at Alamo Pintado. He resides in the town of Ballard with his family.
More InfoKyla Ortved, DVM, PhD, Dipl. ACVS, ACVSMR, is an associate professor of large animal surgery at University of Pennsylvania’s New Bolton Center, in Kennett Square. She received her veterinary degree from the University of Guelph in 2006 and completed her large animal surgical residency training at Cornell University in 2010. Following her residency, Kyla went on to obtain a PhD in equine cartilage repair at Cornell. In 2016, she joined the large animal surgery faculty at New Bolton Center, where she focuses on orthopedic surgery and research on gene and cell therapies for improving cartilage repair and preventing osteoarthritis.
More InfoDr. Mathieu Spriet is a Professor of Diagnostic Imaging at the School of Veterinary Medicine at the University of California, Davis. He obtained his DVM degree from the National Veterinary School of Lyon (France) in 2002 and a Master Degree from the University of Montreal (Canada) in 2004. He has been a diplomate of both the American College of Veterinary Radiology and the European College of Veterinary Diagnostic Imaging since 2007, after completing his radiology residency at the University of Pennsylvania. Dr Spriet joined UC Davis as a faculty member in 2007. He became a diplomate of the newly created ACVR- Equine Diagnostic Imaging specialty in 2019. Dr Spriet has over 75 peer-reviewed publications (full list of publications: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/myncbi/mathieu.spriet.1/bibliography/public/). He is a frequent speaker at national and international conferences. His main area of interest is equine musculoskeletal imaging. He has pioneered the use of positron emission tomography in horses, leading to the development of a scanner specifically designed to image standing horses. He is a consultant for advanced imaging in racehorses at several racetracks in the USA, including Santa Anita and Churchill Downs. He serves as an expert on the Racing Victoria imaging panel.
More InfoDr. Natasha Werpy is a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Radiology and specializes in equine imaging. She graduated from the Colorado State University in Fort Collins, CO (CSU) in 1999. After completing an equine internship in 1999-2000, she completed an imaging internship with Dr. Norman Rantanen followed by a diagnostic imaging residency with Dr. Rantanen and Colorado State University. She worked as the Medical Imaging Director at the Gail Holmes Equine Orthopaedic Research Center at Colorado State University from 2004–2011. She worked part time as an Associate Professor of Diagnostic Imaging at the University of Florida in Gainesville from November 2011 – January 2016. Dr. Werpy is a Consulting Radiologist at Advanced Equine Imaging of Wellington, and at the Ocala Equine Hospital, both in sunny Florida.
