PANEL DISCUSSION DESCRIPTION

There are at least 24 recognised dog breeds with brachycephalic conformation. With the rise in popularity of a number of these breeds, veterinary surgeons are seeing these dogs with increasing frequency for routine surgical and medical treatment as well as for signs of brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome (BOAS). This can place them at higher risk of complications before, during and after general anaesthesia including complete airway obstruction. This panel will discuss multiple aspects of anaesthetising these patients including:

  • Anatomy of brachycephalic patients
  • Identifying which patients may be more at-risk during anaesthesia
  • Preoperative interventions to help mitigate potential issues
  • Drug selection for premedication, induction and recovery from anaesthesia
  • Recognising problems and how to treat them

Join us for this exciting panel discussion as the world’s leading experts come together to discuss this important relevant topic. Questions from attendees will be encouraged.

Dr. Turi Aarnes is a graduate of the Atlantic Veterinary College in Prince Edward Island, Canada and completed an internship at the Greenbrier Veterinary Referral Center in Virginia. She completed residencies in anesthesia and clinical pharmacology, and earned two Master’s degrees in Comparative and Veterinary Medicine, and Translational Pharmacology at The Ohio State University. Dr. Aarnes is a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Anesthesia and Analgesia. She is currently a Professor in Anesthesiology and Pain Management at The Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine.

Subsequently, she underwent surgical residency training at UC Davis and completed board certification to become a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Surgery in 2021. She finished a fellowship in minimally invasive surgery and interventional radiology in 2022 and is an ACVS Fellow of Minimally Invasive Surgery (Small Animal Soft Tissue). She is currently an Assistant Professor of Soft Tissue Minimally Invasive Surgery at the University of Pennsylvania.

Dr. Mama developed her keen desire to work with animals while growing up in India where she was fortunate to have opportunities to ride horses and care for pet animals including dachshunds, guinea pigs and chickens. At the age of nine, while watching a procedure on a horse, she thought to herself, "surely we can do better," but wasn’t seeing great training opportunities close to where she lived. So, after finishing high school in India, she applied and was accepted to Washington State University where she completed both her undergraduate and veterinary degrees. The Palouse was a stark contrast to the city of millions she grew up, but she was grateful to still be able to ride horses and through that build many cherished friendships.

Upon graduation and still holding onto the thought that she would be an equine veterinarian (despite having enjoyed her anesthesia rotations in veterinary school) she pursued a large animal rotating internship at the University of Guelph. It was there she became convinced her true passion was indeed anesthesia. Therefore, she pursued an anesthesia and critical care residency at the University of California, Davis and worked there for a few years before moving to Colorado State University where she has been a faculty member since 1996. She enjoys managing a variety of species while also teaching DVM and graduate students and has pursued research interests directed at improving patient care and safety. She feels fortunate that as part of her job she has had the opportunity to advance anesthesia and pain management through continuing education for veterinarians in many different venues both nationally and internationally.
