Alan Guthrie completed his veterinary studies at the University of Pretoria, where he was awarded BVSc and MMedVet degrees. He subsequently completed a PhD at Louisiana State University. Alan is Director of the Equine Research Centre at the University of Pretoria. He is particularly interested in equine infectious diseases with a focus on vector-borne diseases including African horse sickness, equine encephalosis and equine piroplasmosis.
