Dr. Frans van Toor graduated from the University of Utrecht in 1989. Immediately after completing his veterinary degree, he began practicing at Veterinary Clinic Bodegraven in the Netherlands. In 1990, he joined Equine Veterinary Clinic De Raaphorst in Wassenaar, where, under the mentorship of Dr. Hans van Schie, he began specializing in equine orthopaedics.

During his time at De Raaphorst, the innovative UTC scan (Ultrasound Tissue Characterization) technique was developed—an advanced imaging method that allows for highly detailed assessment of tendons and ligaments, including their structure, quality, and load-bearing capacity.

In 2002, Dr. van Toor became the owner of Equine Clinic De Raaphorst, and in 2006, he co-founded VetCT, a pioneering facility offering computed tomography (CT) imaging for horses in Lienden, the Netherlands. Dr. van Toor became ISELP-certified (International Society of Equine Locomotor Pathology) in 2011 and is currently completing his residency with the American College of Veterinary Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation (ACVSMR).

He is a frequent speaker at international veterinary conferences and equine sports events, where he shares his expertise in equine orthopaedics, imaging, and sports medicine. In 2015, Dr. van Toor co-founded the Sporthorse Medical Diagnostic Centre (SMDC) with Dr. Erik Bergman. SMDC is now recognized as a centre of excellence for sport horse care, where Dr. van Toor continues to examine and treat patients on a daily basis.
