Critical Care

Dr. Hurcombe originally hails from Adelaide, Australia where he graduated in 2003 as a veterinarian from Murdoch University in Perth. Following an internship, he moved to the USA and completed a residency in equine internal medicine, a MS degree in clinical endocrinology, and a fellowship in equine emergency and critical care (ECC) at The Ohio State University.

Being a double-boarded specialist (both the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (ACVIM) and the American College of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care (ACVECC), he has fostered an international reputation in emergency and critical care for the past 15+ years having worked at numerous universities and private practices around the world. Dr. Hurcombe has published widely in veterinary emergency, critical care, and surgery topics and has taught veterinary students, interns, and residents for nearly two decades including several of the doctors here at PASE. Further, he has lectured around the world on ECC topics to a wide variety of veterinary audiences. He continues to collaborate on research projects and is co-editing a new textbook in emergency and critical care. In addition, Dr. Hurcombe has also completed coursework and certification in diversity and inclusion in veterinary medicine; an area of particular interest.

Dr. Hurcombe is always up for a challenge, and he recently made the move to small animal practice. His clinical passion centers on disorders of the acute abdomen (obstructions, intestinal twists, infections, bleeding) and he routinely provides emergency surgery, critical care, and emergency medicine services here at PASE.

When not working, Dr. Hurcombe enjoys traveling, playing music (piano, voice), fishing, and spending time with his partner, Justin.
