COURSE DESCRIPTION
This 2-day practical course provides equine practitioners with a good overview on all medical, orthopaedic, dental and surgical aspects specific to donkeys allowing participants to not only expand their knowledge but especially their hands-on skillset. Through the following lectures the highly experienced speakers will highlight how different donkeys are from horses and will share useful tips and tricks with the attendees:
- Not just a small Horse – How Donkeys are different…
- Colic and its particular challenges in Donkeys
- Dentistry in Donkeys
- Orthopaedic Problems – Lameness & Hoof Disorders
- Dealing with Liver Diseases in Donkeys
- Donkey Nutrition
- Endocrine Disorders
- Surgery in Donkeys
- Hyperlipaemia
- The Role of the Donkey Globally
Between both afternoons, 7 hours of practical sessions on live donkeys and cadaver specimens and case-based discussionswill give attendees plenty of opportunity to put theory into practice and to ask questions in small groups (2 – 4 attendees / ultrasound machine). Each attendee will rotate through the following practical sessions under the watchful eye of the internationally renowned specialists:
- Abdominal Ultrasound
- Ophthalmologic Procedures – Nerve blocks, lavage system placement, keratotomy, aqueocentesis etc.
- Anaesthesia – Case-based Protocols
- Hyperlipaemia Workshop
- Donkey Dentistry (live donkeys & specimens)
- Exotic Donkey Disease – Case examples

The course fee includes catered lunch, coffee/tea breaks, a wine & cheese reception, extensive electronic course notes and a certificate of attendance. Attendees can choose to only attend the lectures (= Lectures Only) on this course or can register for the entire course (= Lectures & Practical Sessions). Early course registration is recommended as there are only a limited number of places available.

Tine graduated from the Tierärztliche Hochschule Hannover in Germany in 2005. Following her dissertation she undertook a rotating internship at the Université de Liege in Belgium. After a few years in private practice, Tine completed an equine medicine residency at the University of Illinois and became an ACVIM-LA and ECEIM diplomate. She was the internal medicine clinician at the Tierklinik Lüsche in Germany before she moved to South Africa to work as a Senior Lecturer in Equine Internal Medicine at the University of Pretoria while simultaneously undertaking PhD research on African Horse Sickness.
Tine has particular interest in infectious diseases and critical care as well as gastrointestinal and neonatal patients.
More InfoAlex qualified from Cambridge vet school, and after being an equine vet for 8 years and obtaining the Advanced Certificate in Equine Practice, joined the Donkey Sanctuary in Devon, becoming Lead vet for education. She has a Masters from Edinburgh in International Animal Health and is an Associate Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. During her time at the Donkey Sanctuary Alex covered clinic and ambulatory roles and managed the intern programme. She has travelled extensively working with donkeys and is now a committee member for BEVA trust, which aims to place volunteer vets with placements overseas to help equines, and also runs castration clinics in the UK.
Alex is now International Equine project manager for WVS (Worldwide Veterinary Services) and an ambulatory vet with Summerleaze Equine in Devon.
