COURSE DESCRIPTION
Oral extraction techniques have been shown to cause much fewer post-interventional complications in horses compared to surgical extraction techniques. Performing oral dental extractions should however not be taken lightly as complications like dental fractures, retained root tips, collateral damage etc. can easily occur and require in-depth anatomical knowledge, good technical skills and clinical versatility to resolve. This 2-day highly practical boutique course (max. 24 attendees) is aimed at practitioners with a good working knowledge in equine dentistry who want to learn about various oral dental extraction techniques, how to apply them clinically and managing arising complications. The panel of internationally renowned specialists will be sharing technical tips and tricks and pearls of wisdom that they have accumulated over the many years of working in equine dental practice.
Between both afternoons the 7 hours of practical sessions will provide an intimate environment for attendees to develop their practical skills on equine specimens in true small groups (2-3 vets per specimen) at the following stations:
- Oral Examination & Endoscopy
- Diagnostic Imaging – Radiography etc.
- Local Anesthetic Techniques (incl. TMJ)
- Incisor & Canine Extractions
- Oral Extraction Techniques for Cheek Teeth I
- Oral Extraction Techniques for Cheek Teeth II
The course fee includes lunches, coffee/tea breaks, extensive course notes and a certificate of attendance. Attendees can choose to only attend the lectures (= Lectures Only) on this course or can register for the entire course (= Lectures & Practical Sessions). On the evening of the first day all attendees are invited to attend the wine and cheese reception. Early course registration is recommended as there are only a limited number of places available.
Dr. Jon Gieche grew up in rural Michigan, an avid American Quarter Horse Association horse show enthusiast. His undergraduate study was in Biology and Physics at Michigan State University. He was accepted into veterinary medical school after only three years of undergraduate study and received his Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine from Michigan State University College of Veterinary Medicine in 1986. In 1991, Dr. Gieche founded Kettle Moraine Equine Hospital and Regional Equine Dental Center, a state-of-the-art full service equine hospital and ambulatory practice in Wisconsin. Dr. Gieche has the honor of being a two time past president of the Wisconsin Equine Practitioners Association. A lifelong learner, Dr. Gieche has continued to educate himself in all aspects of Equine Medicine and Surgery. In February 2013, Dr. Gieche achieved Equine Fellowship status in the Academy of Veterinary Dentistry (AVD-EQ). He is one of only eight AVD-EQ Fellows in North America. In August 2016, Dr. Gieche also achieved diplomate status in the American Veterinary Dental College – Equine (AVDC-EQ). His extensive knowledge of Equine Dentistry has given him the opportunity to instruct veterinarians and veterinary students via lectures and hands-on wet labs for the American Association of Equine Practitioners (AAEP), the Veterinary Dental Forum, and universities throughout the United States.
Dr. Gieche has also had the privilege of presenting topics on equine dentistry internationally, and for multiple state veterinary medical associations and other private organizations throughout the United States.
Dr. Gieche is a huge soccer enthusiast and a licensed soccer coach. All three of his children are accomplished soccer goalkeepers. He has trained goalkeepers from pee wee through the college level. When not seeing patients he enjoys river and open water kayaking and SUPing with his wife Lynne and his family. Between patients, watching wildlife on their 40 acre hospital property is always special to him. His hobbies are Gin and coffee tasting and many of his clients would call him an always on the go “coffee-haulic”. He also loves to use his pellet grill/smoker and make his own rubs. Most importantly, he loves to spend time with his growing family.
Dr. Brad Tanner found his passion for horses at a young age on his family’s farm in Kentucky. He obtained a bachelor’s degree in Animal Science from the University of Kentucky in 2001, followed by veterinary school at Auburn University, graduating in 2005. After graduation Brad completed an ambulatory internship at Rood and Riddle, the following year became an associate and served as the resident veterinarian for Shadwell farm. Dr. Tanner became a shareholder in the practice in 2012. He is one of very few Board-Certified Veterinary Dentist™ and a Diplomate of the American Veterinary Dental College.
His ambulatory practice is largely focused on dentistry, Thoroughbred reproduction, neonatal/ foal medicine and herd health. Dr. Tanner has a large referral case load for advanced dentistry and surgical procedures with an interest in sinus disease. He serves on many committees in organized medicine for the AVMA, AAEP, KAEP and College of Veterinary Dentistry. Dr. Tanner is published in both the areas of reproduction and dentistry and frequently lectures at local, national and international scientific meetings.
He is married with two sons and enjoys spending time outside on their farm in Versailles and raising Thoroughbred foals. Away from the farm he enjoys coaching youth baseball/ basketball and attending live sporting events-UK sports, horse racing and baseball games.

““Highly practical with a great theoretic base. Even though I already was quite familiar with the techniques presented, I really learned some new details and got some insights for daily use.””
- Nina Lundgren, Svenska Hasttandvarden AB, Sweden - Equine Oral Dental Extraction Techniques course
““Great overview of normal anatomy and pathology, radiograph technique and extraction techniques.””
- Scott Morley, United States - Equine Oral Dental Extraction Techniques course
““On the high-end of course but well worth the expense. The title was misleading, this course helped increase my knowledge and scope of veterinary dentistry. I do not believe this was "Basic Dentistry" content, it was better.””
