EVENT DESCRIPTION
VetPD has combined an exhilarating week-long safari experience at the Mongena Game Lodge**** in the Dinokeng Game Reserve, near Johannesburg, South Africa, with a total of 25 hours of safaris, 30+ hours of cutting-edge lectures / case discussions for attendees to choose from. The following internationally renowned speakers will be involved with this event and lectures will be aimed at experienced general and advanced practitioners: Dr. Jonathan Anderson (Rainbow Equine Hospital, UK), Dr. Fairfield Tucker Bain (Rood and Riddle Equine Hospital, USA), Dr. Sarah Puchalski (Puchalski Equine Diagnostic Imaging, USA) and Dr. Rachel Allbaugh (Iowa State University, USA).

The Dinokeng Game Reserve is a malaria-free game reserve, 1 hours' drive from Johannesburg International Airport. There the ‘Big Five’ (lion, elephant, buffalo, leopard & rhinoceros) roam wild and free in the 18,500-hectare game reserve. Bass fishing and the obligatory swimming pool will provide you with the ideal environment to relax with your friends and accompanying partner/guest. The lectures will be held at Mongena Game Lodge. Guests will be staying at Mongena Game Lodge itself or at Little Mongena.
From Mon – Thu there will be a total of 4-5 hrs per day of sunrise- and sunset safaris and the lectures and case-discussions will be held between 10.15am – 3.30pm. Every day attendees can choose from several streams of highly illustrated lectures (in English) on a wide range of disciplines and topics. The evenings will be free for leisurely wining and dining, to meet up with old friends and to make new ones.
The 30+ hours of cutting-edge lectures / case discussions will cover the following disciplines (program to follow soon):
- Neurology
- Surgery
- Internal Medicine
- Ophthalmology
During the course open and frank discussions are encouraged and the speakers will share their personal experiences with attendees, be it successes or failures. There will be plenty of opportunities to discuss diagnostic/therapeutic strategies and cases with the speakers during the lectures or the dedicated case discussions.
On Friday there won’t be any lectures, which will allow attendees and their partners/guests to relax at the pool, go for a bush walk or go on a daytrip to explore this beautiful region.
Excursions to 'Adventure with Elephants', 'Food for Rhinos', 'Hot Air Ballooning', 'Lesedi Cultural Village' and Horseback Riding to name but a few can be organised through our partner 'Dinokeng Events' (Subject to availability and surcharges (transfers & entrance at cost) apply).
*The event fee includes airport transfers, accommodation, all meals (incl. tea/coffee and one soft drink per meal), transfers between lodges and the sunrise and sunset safaris from Monday to Thursday, all lectures and workshops as well as extensive course notes and a certificate of attendance. In 2011 Dr. Allbaugh returned to Iowa and is currently an Associate Professor at Iowa State University. Dr. Allbaugh’s passion for veterinary ophthalmology began with her childhood cat's nearly blinding eye disease. Since that time, she has been devoted to the field, enjoying clinical practice, teaching, and research involving animal eyes across species.
Dr. Allbaugh not only regularly publishes articles and speaks at conferences but helps to serve the profession through active participation in numerous professional organizations. In her free time, Dr. Allbaugh loves spending time with her family and friends, as well as riding her horses, playing sports, hiking, and any other outdoor activity.
More InfoJonathan Anderson is a director and surgeon at the Rainbow Equine Hospital. He is a Royal Veterinary College Equine Surgical Specialist, a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons and an FEI Veterinary Delegate.
Jonathan graduated from the Edinburgh’s Royal School of Veterinary Studies in 2000, completed an internship year at the San Luis Rey Equine Hospital in California, before moving to the Rainbow Equine Hospital in the UK for 3 years. He went back Stateside to undergo a large animal clinical fellowship at Oregon State Veterinary Teaching Hospital followed by an Equine Surgical Residency at the University of California, Davis. He achieved diplomate status in 2009, remained as a clinical instructor at UC Davis for a year before moving back to the Rainbow Equine Hospital at the end of 2009 to join the surgical team. He has been involved in advancing the use of CT both as diagnostic and intra-operative imaging modality within the equine veterinary field. His main veterinary interests include all things orthopaedic which includes the evaluation, advanced imaging and surgical treatment of horses with cervical stenosis. He is keen to see a sharing of knowledge and equipping of equine vets to recognise and treat horses with this condition.
His biggest asset is his long suffering wife Naomi and he kind of helps to manage a brood of 5 kids which means little time for any other activities although a run in the mountains every so often is where he likes to recharge his batteries once again!
More InfoDr. Fairfield Bain grew up on a Virginia farm where his love for animals was nurtured from a young age. Spending countless hours tending to livestock, he developed a deep understanding of their needs and a keen eye for detecting the slightest signs of illness.
After completing his veterinary degree from Auburn University, Dr. Bain’s passion for equine medicine led him to pursue advanced internal medicine and pathology training. He honed his skills at Hagyard Equine Medical Institute, Washington State University College of Veterinary Medicine and the University of Queensland. During his residencies in internal medicine at the University of Florida and in anatomic pathology at Kansas State University, he was involved in groundbreaking research, published scientific papers and presented at national conferences.
Today, Dr. Bain brings his expertise to Rood & Riddle Equine Hospital as a dedicated internal medicine specialist. His primary areas of interest include gastrointestinal disorders, respiratory diseases and metabolic conditions. When he’s not working, Dr. Bain can be found in the high mountains of Colorado and New Mexico, exploring and chasing elk, occasionally on horseback. During the off-season for hunting, Dr. Bain enjoys practicing his archery skills, traveling and spending quality time with loved ones.
More InfoSarah Puchalski is a native of Roberts Creek, British Columbia, Canada, and grew up riding horses in the BC countryside, competing actively in 3-day eventing. She obtained a B.S. in Biology from Simon Fraser University in Burnaby, BC and went to veterinary school in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, where she graduated with distinction in 1999. From Saskatoon, she moved to Pennsylvania as an intern/resident in field service sports medicine at the University of Pennsylvania’s New Bolton Center from 1999-2001. From New Bolton Center, Dr. Puchalski entered a four-year residency in diagnostic imaging at the University of California, Davis. She obtained board certification in the American College of Veterinary Radiology in 2004, passing the grueling examination on her first attempt.
In 2005, Dr. Puchalski joined the faculty in diagnostic imaging in the Department of Surgical and Radiological Sciences, UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine, as an Assistant Professor. During this time, she divided her focus between didactic and clinical teaching, research, service to the school and clinical radiology. In the classroom, she led the general large animal radiology course and was a co-instructor in the equine lameness and radiology course. Her research interests predominantly surround the use of novel imaging techniques for the diagnosis of lameness conditions in equine athletes. As she has gained experience in this field, she has developed an international reputation for her expertise. Dr. Puchalski was awarded tenure at the University in 2012 and promoted to Associate Professor, and has authored scientific, educational and lay articles as well as contributed to numerous textbooks.
Dr. Puchalski left the University in late 2013 to open her own practice as a diagnostic imaging consultant. In the winter months she is based in Wellington, Florida at Palm Beach Equine Clinic and during the remainder of the year in Petaluma, California at Circle Oak Equine. As a show jumper, competing actively in Wellington, Florida at the Winter Equestrian Festival and in Northern California, she understands the challenges of equine ownership and what may be needed to keep these athletes sound.

Have any unwanted textbooks?
"VetBooks for Africa“: a group of veterinary students from the vet school at Onderstepoort does a tour of some neighbouring countries, visiting vet schools and charities. The main purpose behind the trip (other than offering the students an opportunity to visit the countries and making connections) is to distribute veterinary textbooks to them. They collect books on an ongoing basis, and would be very happy to receive any unused text books. There is a short video of their last trip at https://youtu.be/i9fqrtFlamU
